摇摆乐盛行于上世纪美国三十年代，经常采用20～30人的大乐队（Big Band）形式，因此三十年代又被称为爵士乐历史上的大乐队时期。从音乐上分析，摇摆乐最明显的特征是让你一听便想随之舞动的摇摆节奏。所以摇摆乐被认为是当时最好的伴舞音乐。
