“新奇怪美国”音乐主要根源于美国六七十年代的迷幻摇滚以及民谣，这个词一般认为是David Keenan在2003年8月的《The Wire》一书中创造出来的，之后由Matt Valentine和Ron J. Schneiderman在Brattleboro自由民谣音乐节中持续放大。奇怪民谣（Freak Folk）本身是一个松散的定义，它通过声音以及肢体语言来表达一种新的嬉皮美学的形式。这种形式如同行为艺术一般，用各种奇怪的方式来定义或者是表达自己的内心，既有声音与身体相对抽离的静置状态，又有精灵古怪的低声呓语，仿佛希望与幻灭同在。
